The holiday edit

A Sale Is Not a Shopping List.

A calmer plan for the deal days between fall and Christmas. Useful even when the countdown banner is shouting.

01 / The useful details

Write the list before opening the sale.

Record the person, the actual item or idea, your maximum spend, and whether you already bought it. That last column is surprisingly powerful.

  • Include tax and shipping in the budget.
  • Check sizes, preferences, and return needs.
  • Do not add a recipient because something is discounted.

02 / The useful details

Compare the same thing.

Match the model, quantity, size, seller, and condition before deciding which price is better. A percentage-off label is not enough information.

  • Record a price you have actually observed.
  • Check delivery and return terms.
  • Set a maximum price rather than a target percentage discount.

03 / The useful details

Use a watch list, not a vigil.

Choose a few items to check during announced sale events. Dates and offers change; this guide does not promise an event schedule or a lowest price.

  • Buy when the item meets your need and budget.
  • Remove purchased items immediately.
  • Close the tab when the useful work is done.

Keep the good ideas going.

A note for the season

A little ahead of the holiday.

Seasonal finds, a sensible plan, and the occasional reminder that buying the dessert is allowed.
